Could please anyone comment and check, if the following
is really a bug and if so whether it is found in other
executables than for RS6000 and Solaris. I can produce it
with C-Version 3.141 and Version 3.1415 (C version 6.1).
Here it comes:

\font\xxx=cmr10{\xxx test}\bye

The problem is, that TeX wants to read the metric information
of a file `cmr10{', not recognizing the left brace. The TeX-book
states, that `the syntax for <file name> is not standard in TeX,
because different operating systems have different conventions'.
But I do not believe, that this covers the above behaviour.

Some more tests showed, that the same holds for other special
characters _^#&${} and quotes. I did not test very intensive,
but ${abc}-constructs are read from the environment. This is a
nice feature but came to me quite unexpected.
